Fall has a way of creeping up on us. John Latimer shares all the events that are currently happening to help us get used to the changes.
Listen above to this week's Phenology Report to hear about changes in our trees, including the difference between white, bur and red oak acorns.
John has been keeping an eye on the bergamot, asters, goldenrod and sawtooth sunflowers.
As for birds, the American Kestrels are still hanging around and John has a flock of Trumpeter Swans, including six cygnets that are now quite large.
Woodbine, smooth sumac, maples and spreading dogbane are all beginning to show signs of fall color, and finally John talks about lilacs and the fungus that is afflicting many of them right now. He suggests giving your lilacs plenty of water, raking up the downed leaves and thinning the plant. He recommends waiting until spring if you want to fertilize or put fungicide on your lilacs.
